In the early 1960s, it became clear that the vacant plots of land adjacent to the Boland area that could be purchased would not be sufficient for Pharmacia's expansion.
Pharmacia turned to Uppsala Municipality's Real Estate Office with a request for proposals for new plots of land. In Fyrislund, it was possible to buy 800,000 sq.m. and this was judged to ensure Pharmacia's needs for a very long time.
The work was started with Carl Nyrén as architect in 1968.
Pharmacia's responsible for the project was civil engineer Lars Forsman with civil engineer Arne Sten as assistant.
The area has grown based on the pharmaceutical industry's requirements for quality, performance and safety, etc. The quality is expressed in the architectural design of both buildings, surroundings and building and technical details.
The area has three dominant materials - concrete, wood and stainless steel. These have different characters and therefore give different expressions. Concrete stands for rational, industrial construction. In many buildings, the frame is exposed. The wood stands for the Nordic and humanistic. The stainless steel plate is a glossy contrast to the raw concrete and presents the pure, the clinical, the pharmaceutical. These three recurring materials make the facility feel like a whole.
The 1971 Kasper Salin Prize was awarded to Pharmacia's facilities in Fyrislund with the motivation “The facility is an example of construction where the requirements for technical rationality and a good working environment have been combined in strong artistic design.”
The wingspan of history can still be seen today when the old mansion in Fyrislund remains. It has been used as a kindergarten for more than 20 years.
More historical facts about Pharmacia in Uppsala and Fyrislund can be found from the book, Nittonhundra elva - Nittonhundra åttiosex - Pharmacia sjuttiofem år, by Lasse Johanson 1986 or the various writings, Från Apoteket Elgen till Wall Street by Carl-Erik Sjöberg, and Pharmacia 100 år.
In connection with Pharmacia celebrating 100 years, the permanent exhibition Pharmacia - an era in Uppsala was opened by Pharmacia Veteranerna, which you can see in the corridor leading from the restaurant down to house 16. Klövern has a close collaboration with the association Pharmacia Veteranerna, where history of the location, the company and the buildings are of great importance.
Since Klövern in 2006 acquired the property Fyrislund 6: 6 from Pharmacia / Pfizer, the transformation has taken place to Uppsala Business Park with almost 80 different companies on site. The focus is still on the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry.
